Dave Wilson of American Car Imports Racing set a new European Record at Santa Pod's Main Event in the first round of the FIA European Championship in the Top Methanol Dragster class. With a 5.461 Second ET at 244 mph in the final against Peter Schoefer, this was the fastest pass ever made by a TMD dragster outside America. Backing up Wilson's 5.483 win against Rob Turner in the semi final, the victory in the final sets a milestone in European Drag Racing history.
With only 2 tenths of a second behind the world record of 5.26 set by Duane Shields at Englishtown, New Jersey, the American Car Imports Racing Team has now demonstrated that the often stated myth about not being able to run as fast in Europe, is indeed a myth. Elapsed times of mid 5.40's often win NHRA events in the States! Ever since American Car Imports became involved in Drag Racing 3 years ago they have been closing the transatlantic gap.
Anthony Cohen, joint MD of American Car Imports, explains that the key to the success is to have a great driver, an experienced and committed team, sufficient funding and determined marketing. "You have to run the team like a business" says Cohen "and you have to be able to sell the attributes of Drag Racing to other businesses who want to do some serious brand building on the back of the worlds fastest and most exciting motorsport. Backed by Playstation, we are promoting Drag Racing as the Formula One of the American Car scene."
Using the new 345hp Dodge Ram 5.7 Hemi as the tow vehicle for the Dragster, and featuring a new state of the art race trailer built by Specialist Engineering Services, American Car Imports have attracted some interesting sponsors. The American Appliance Centre and Silverline Tools are two recent additions, along with Alternative Automotive Fuel Conversions, HGC Scaffolding, US Automotive, North Hants Tyres, Air Sea Logistics, 76 Racing Fuels, OCW, Classic American, and 1st Line Motorcycles. The whole "F1" quality design package of the team was created by Total Design and was implemented by Custom Graphics and Euro American Car Services.
Gone are the days when Drag Racing played second fiddle to the States. Cohen says "As long as we have great tracks like Santa Pod where we can run big numbers, it's worth making the investment and giving Drag Racing the commitment-after all it's great fun and good for business." Leading the British and European Championships you can follow the American Car Imports Racing team at www.americancarimportsracing.com where the teams Computer and Web Design sponsor Expert IT, keeps the progress up to date.
