On Thursday (22/05/03), the press day at Santa Pod in the run-up to the FIA main event, the two famous Top Fuel racers Andy Carter and Micke Kaagered (2 of Europe’s only 3 300-mph-men!) had a showdown in 2 almost identical red Ford Lightnings. Both trucks are powered by a stock supercharged 5.4 V8 engine with 380 bhp and have been supplied by American Car Imports – one of them is actually regularly successfully raced in the Sportsman ET class on Britain’s drag strips by their customer George Greves.

Andy Carter and Micke Kaagered had 2 match races in the Ford Lightnings. Micke took the first victory in George Greves’ car with an ET of 13.656 sec @ 100.67 mph – clearly beating Andy’s 15.146 @ 94.70 mph. After the guys had swapped cars, they had their 2nd match race in the Ford Lightnings. Micke was taking again the win, on a holeshot, with a 13.761 @ 98.75 mph compared to Andy’s 13.680 @ 99.61 mph. There were only 0.108 seconds between them at the finish line.

The competition between these Top Fuel racers, in for them highly unusual vehicles, was shown on Channel 4’s breakfast TV on the 23rd May.
Double looser Andy Carter commented, that it’d be a completely different story between him and Micke Kaagered at the race days in their Top Fuel dragsters – and his prediction became reality.
