29/03/2004 ACI RACING TOP METHANOL DRAGSTER WINS IN AMERICA!!! On Monday the 29th of March 2004 at roughly 0.30am while most English folks were getting off to sleep or stirring their horlicks, one very experienced Englishman was busy re-writing Drag Racing history in America. Dave Wilson and the ACI Racing team backed by Silverline Tools and Playstation, won the first ever NHRA Lucas Oil divisional title by anyone from outside of North America. To have won the 2003 FIA European and MSA British Titles was a major task, but beating the Americans at their own game on home soil takes things to a new level! The fact that many European racers had tried before and come up short tells the tale. No European racer has ever won a "Wally" in the history of NHRA Drag Racing. Wilson's triumph is a result of the whole teams efforts in the US over the past 5 months. The teams journey started last October where the highlight was running a 5.38 at the World finals at Pomona-this was only 12 hundredths of a second off Duane Shields's world record at 5.26. This year, the team then went on to qualify at the next three NHRA meetings held at Pomona,Phoenix and Gainesville, with some excellent times achieved. The event at Tucson in Arizona started well for the team as they qualified number 2 at the very tricky altitude track with a 5.58, 247mph run. Easing through to the final to face in form, west coast hitter Chris Demke in the Peenrite special, Wilson left with, and then just outpowered the Californian with a winning 5.65,246 MPH to a close but no cigar 5.68, 250mph try. The final stateside attendances for the American Car Imports Racing team are at Las Vegas and Houston where they will try to become the first ever racers from outside the US to win a National event, and further enhance the reputation of European Drag Racing on the American stage!
